It was the third time in 10 years that Edward F. Guy, 30, of Fair Lawn, was charged with assaulting police, records show.

Guy was on a hospital gurney when he spit at Officer Greg Carter, who was then brought to The Valley Hospital for a blood test and treatment — weeks short of a decade since he was arrested on charges of assaulting police and resisting arrest in Fair Lawn, authorities said.

The 6-foot, 210-pound Guy was “hanging out of the passenger window of a vehicle and yelling on Route 208 northbound” when Officer Greg Carter pulled him over at 2:30 a.m. today, Glen Rock Police Chief Fred Stahman told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

Carter stopped the vehicle, whose driver cooperated. Police said Guy refused to get out, shouting curses at Carter, before backups from Glen Rock, Ridgewood and Hawthorne arrived and helped take the still-resisting, apparently intoxicated suspect into custody.

He was first brought to Bergen County Regional Medical Center, where the spitting incident occurred, police said.  Guy was then processed at the Bergen County Jail, where he later posted $50,000 bail.

He’s due in Municipal Court to answer charges of aggravated assault on a police officer, obstruction and eluding, Stahman said. Guy also received traffic safety summonses.

Additional charges were possible from other departments that responded, the chief said.

Records show Guy faced similar charges when he was charged with aggravated assault on two officers and resisting arrest in Fair Lawn in late January 2004.

Five years later, he was one of four Fair Lawn men charged in connection with a Labor Day 2009 incident in which authorities said a summer rental at Lake Comoo sustained several thousand dollars in damage in a domestic dispute.

Authorities in Lake Como said Guy threatened the female victim while kicking in her door and assaulted one of the officers who responded to the incident.
