The combatants headed outside after the fight broke out just before midnight Sunday at the new Wawa on Jewell Street, Capt. Raymond S. Kovach said this morning.

There, a 20-year-old man was stabbed just under the shoulder blade, he said.

Those involved fled in vehicles, Kovach said.

The woman wasn’t present when the incident occurred, he said.

Garfield police notified surrounding towns and quickly were told by Paterson police that the victim had checked himself into St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center.

Detectives soon after arrested Raim Duplessis, 18, of Garfield on one aggravated assault and two weapons charges. He remained held in the Bergen County Jail this aftenoon.

The Garfield juvenile was taken to the Bergen County Juvenile Detention Center in Teterboro on a delinquency complaint charging aggravated assault.

The Wawa had its grand opening earlier this month.

An investigation was continuing, Kovach said.
