The call came in from the Walmart on Passaic Street just before 4:30 on Monday, after security officers at the store grabbed hold of the unidentified thief, who they said took a Metro PCS cellphone worth nearly $160.

After bolting from the security office, the thief got behind the wheel of a 1992 Black Honda Civic 4D with New York State license plates that he apparently drove there in, said Garfield Capt. Darren Sucorowski.

Garfield Officer Noah Murphy spotted the vehicle moments later, activated his overhead lights and pursued the Honda south on Midland Avenue.

The driver then turned right into Hepworth Place, got out and ran south along the railroad tracks, Sucorowski said.

A perimeter was set up and a search conducted, but police didn’t find him.

They did arrest his passenger, 22-year-old Lesandra Rivera, charging her with obstruction.
