Castellano, who wore Badge #6397, was struck by a car on Route I-195 while searching for an armed man who, it turned out, never existed.

The State Troopers Fraternal Association of New Jersey has established a fund for the late officer’s 4-year-old daughter and 1-year-old son, endorsed by the New Jersey State Police and administered through TD Bank.

Visiting hours are from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Lakewood Funeral Home, also on Route 9, in Castellano’s Lakewood hometown.

Born in Lakewood, Castellano lived in Jackson until he moved to Howell six years ago, according to a report on app.com. He graduated from Jackson Memorial High School in 1998, and received a Jackson PBA scholarship that year.
