Gainsford Smith, 36, already is awaiting trial for a Paterson drive-by shooting in May. He was free on $150,000 bail when police got the call of the alleged threat, purportedly involving a silver handgun, Detective Capt. Dean Kazinci said. Now he’s back behind bars.

Smith, who recently spent 31 months in state prison, had bolted, but officers found him minutes later in a Summit Avenue backyard, the captain told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

While searching his Congress Avenue residence on a judge’s warrant, they found the pot, worth more than $25,000 on the street, as well as packaging materials, he said. No gun turned up.

Smith is being held on $100,000 bail at the Bergen County Jail, pending future court action. The charges: terroristic threats and various drug and weapons possession counts.

Records show Smith already has served time for selling pot to undercover detectives, who found him carrying a defaced handgun, as well as assault. State records show he served 2½ years before being paroled in 2003.
