A federal judge in Newark ordered Yasmil "Animal" Minaya, 31, held without bail Tuesday on conspiracy, distribution and other drug-related charges, Acting U.S. Attorney William E. Fitzpatrick said.
"Minaya and his co-defendants were serving as New Jersey and New York area distributors for a drug trafficking organization operating in the Dominican Republic, Mexico and elsewhere," Fitzpatrick said.
The drugs "were usually transported to this area via truck and were paid for by the defendants before being sold on the street," the U.S. attorney said.
Authorities linked the network to several major seizures between March 2015 and earlier this year, he added.
Fitzpatrick credited special agents with the DEA and officers with the New Jersey State Police Trafficking North Unit.
Handling the case is Assistant U.S. Attorney Melissa Wangenheim of the OCDETF/Narcotics Unit in Newark.
