The call from the Broadway pharmacy of a man driving off in a blue 2000 Pontiac after swiping $140 worth of gum and razors came in just before 9:30 a.m., Sgt. Brian Metzler said.

Officer Chris O’Shaughnessy spotted the car heading west on Broadway and pursued it into Paterson when the driver – identified as 32-year-old Jason Schulman of Tuxedo Park – refused to stop, he said.

As Schulman tried turning onto East 33rd Street, the car slammed into a Dodge Caravan, Metzler said.

He got out and tried to run, but O’Shaughnessy chased him down, the sergeant said.

No immediate injuries were reported, the proceeds were recovered and Schulman was charged with shoplifting, eluding, resisting arrest, reckless driving and operating an uninsured vehicle with a suspended license, Metzler said.

The 6-foot, 120-pound Schulman, who has an arrest record dating back to 2001 in several North Jersey towns, was also found to have an outstanding warrant out of Fair Lawn.

Bail was set at $25,000 pending transfer to the Bergen County Jail.
