Police are certain that 51-year-old Randy Reed, who was identified by witnesses, will turn up soon. He might not be an easy catch, though:
After swiping $38,000 in gems from a Fair Lawn jewelry store in 1995, Randy Reed led police on a chase that ended when he smashed his getaway into a curb in Paterson.
The 6-foot-1, 185-pound Reed was released from state prison three months ago after serving 2½ years for forgery.
Reed’s name is on an arrest warrant — with a $50,000 bail attached — in connection with the Tenafly crime alone. At least three other North Jersey police departments reportedly are eyeing him for similar offenses.
Reed’s rap sheet already includes 15 felony convictions for a variety of thefts, break-ins and drug-related offenses, as well as several addresses and aliases.
He’s been arrested the past three decades by police from Cliffside Park, Elmwood Park, Fair Lawn, Fort Lee, Pequannock, River Edge and Teaneck, among other towns, records show.
Surveillance video, meanwhile, shows him at Fine Spirits Liquor on Riveredge Road two consecutive days earlier this month.
Authorities said he walked out with two bottles of wine worth more than $400 one day and then the pricey cognac the next.
