Lt. Marc D’Amore and Officer Michael Mulligan spotted 47-year-old Auguston McLeod outside a Market Street convenience store while responding to a 911 call of a man who’d shattered the front door glass with the hammer just after midnight yesterday, Police Chief Michael Foligno
McLeod took off with Mulligan in pursuit, repeatedly ordering him to show his hands, the chief said.
Then he turned an pulled the hammer from his waistband, Foligno said.
“Officer Mulligan displayed great restraint during this confrontation,” the chief told CLIFFVIEW PILOT. “The suspect disregarded the officer’s commands and continued to reach into his waistband and retrieved the hammer.
“Taking into consideration the lighting at the time of the stop, which was poor, the close proximity to the suspect and the suspect’s refusal to heed to the officer’s commands while holding a weapon, Officer Mulligan should be and will commended for his handling of a situation that potentially could have ended very differently.”
McLeod, meanwhile, was charged with burglary, criminal mischief and possession of burglary tools and taken to the Bergen County Jail, where he remained held on $10,000 bail.
McLeod had been released less than two weeks ago after police in Paterson said he attacked a 32-year-old city woman with a rock after she rejected his propositions.
He’d ridden up to her on a bicycle, took off when she rejected him, then returned and hit her with a rock before trying to choke her, they said.
Police grabbed him about 10 minutes later.
