Drivers nailed by red-light cameras could be getting money back

If you paid a ticket because of a red-light camera in Palisades Park, Jersey City or Wayne, you might be entitled to a few bucks back.

Nearly 500,000 motorists in 18 New Jersey towns are being notified of a $4.2 million settlement over tickets generated by red light cameras.

The minimum payout is $8.50, or ten cents on the dollar of the $85 ticket.

No one has admitted any wrongdoing: Rather, American Traffic Solutions has agreed to pay up in response to a class-action lawsuit accusing local officials of not doing traffic studies before the cameras went in and failing to regularly inspect them afterward.

The settlement still has to be approved by a federal judge. A hearing has been scheduled for Sept. 12 in U.S. District Court in Trenton.

And it applies only to those drivers who received red light violations from ATS cameras in the 18 municipalities on or before Aug. 1, 2012.

The other towns: Brick, East Brunswick, East Windsor, Lawrence, Linden, Gloucester Township, Monroe, Piscataway, Pohatcong, Rahway, Roselle Park, Union and Woodbridge.
