Did you hear the one about the black comedian being sued by her Jewish mother-in-law?

If it’s not one thing, it’s your mother-in-law. In this instance, a woman has made a federal case — in New Jersey, of course — over jokes her comic daughter-in-law tells onstage about her and her family. And in doing so, she’s brought more Internet-active publicity to Paterson native Sunda Croonquist than the young comic could ever hope for.

Her MIL, Ruth Zafrin, says Croonquist is making false and malicious jokes about her being racist. In one bit, Croonquist recalls Zafrin’s reaction to her becoming pregnant: “Now we don’t want a name that’s difficult to pronounce like Shaniqua. We’re thinking a name short but delicious. Like Hadassah or Goldie.”

“I am a black woman with the Jewish mother-in-law,” Croonquist says. “The only thing we have in common is that we don’t want to get our hair wet….”

So whose side is young Mark Zafrin taking? His wife’s (be-dump-bump).

Croonquist, husband and guess who?

And what’s he do for a living? He’s a lawyer, what else? (cymbal crash) And his partner is defending Croonquist.

When push comes to nudge, the documents filed in U.S. District Court in Trenton find the Monmouth County couple more peeved at Croonquist’s My Space postings, as well as her web site, www.sundalive.com. Onstage is one thing, but online? You call these jokes?

How many mother-in-laws does it take to change a lightbulb? One. She just stands there and waits for the world to revolve aroud her.

The Edelmans also object to Croonquist mentioning their names and identifying their home towns and synagogue.

Oy.

Guess if you can’t beat ’em, goyem.

(You can watch one of Croonquist’s routines by clicking here.)

I never forget a face, but in my mother-in-law’s case, I’m willing to make an exception.

Any comedian worth his rim shot will tell you it’s all parody. If it wasn’t, Henny Youngman would’ve had the pants sued off him (“I just back from a pleasure trip: I took my mother-in-law to the airport”).

For centuries, comedy has been about young ‘uns taking pot shots at the elder power structure. You even have support groups out there now, including YouTube’s “Mother in Law HELL Channel,” spun off the web site of the same name.

Operated by the “Daughters-in-Law Sisterhood,” the site includes categories that include “Crazy Mother in Law Stories,” “Military Wives in MIL Hell,” and “She Said WHAT?”

Now a single member of that entire class has created a new set of targets: MILK (Mother-in-laws I’d Like to Kill).

The defendant in the case might be hesistant to whack her, though.

After all, before the story first broke, had you even heard of Sunda Croonquist? Now you can’t get away from the story.

Or the jokes.

I went car shopping last week and the salesman asked if I wanted an airbag. Fill in the rest….

Good night, Mrs. Edelman.
