Clifton consultant from Jersey City admits helping clients cheat on taxes

YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: The owner of a Clifton consulting company today admitted in federal court in Newark that he helped clients cheat on their tax returns, defrauding the government out of nearly $85,000.

Sean Gunby Sr., 44, of Jersey City, pleaded guilty to a single charge from a 28-count indictment accusing him of aiding and assisting bogus tax returns. US District Court Judge Claire C. Cecchi set sentencing for April 4.

“While most return preparers provide excellent service to their clients, a few dishonest tax preparers file false and fraudulent returns to defraud the government, the taxpaying public and their own clients,” Shantelle P. Kitchen, special agent in charge of the IRS-Criminal Investigation’s Newark Field Office.

Gunby admitted that he prepared false tax returns for his clients by fabricating and inflating certain expenses, deductions and credits on personal tax returns while sole owner and operator of Gunby Consulting, Inc. and Gunby Consulting Group for the tax years 2006 through 2010.
