Broad Daylight Shooting Mars Proud Day For Police In Paterson

PATERSON, N.J. -- On a day when he was able to announce arrests in two separate killings, and reflect on a 30-year low in overall crime, Paterson Police Director Jerry Speziale also had to deal with a non-fatal, broad-daylight shooting.

Detectives were canvassing the area.

Officers in the 4th Ward area of Auburn Street who heard the shots around 4 p.m. Tuesday began searching the area -- and found the 23-year-old victim with a gunshot wound in his leg, Speziale said.

He was taken to St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center, where the director said his condition was stable.

The victim was walking on Auburn Street near the corner of Godwin Avenue when shots were fired and he was struck, Speziale said.

Detectives were canvassing the area, he said.

Anyone who saw something or has information that could help the investigation is asked to call Detective Francisco Brito or Detective Salvatore Marotta of the Ceasefire Unit at (973) 321-1342.
