The abuse came to light after the boy went into a Main Street store seeking protection after the woman hit him in the head because of his schoolwork, Ramsey Police Chief Bryan Gurney said.

Toshiba Ellerby (yes, TOSHIBA), 32, a 1996 graduate of Paterson Eastside High School, is charged with assault and endangering in connection with the TV cord incident. She’s being held on $10,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail.

A clerk at The Store, 160 E. Main Street, called police and kept the boy safe until officers arrived, Gurney said. Officers immediately summoned the Ramsey Ambulance Corps to evaluate his injuries.

That’s when they found scars on his back, the chief said.

The Division of the Youth and Family Services placed the boy with his biological father, Gurney said.
