Bayonne Bridge reopens, then closes again after car overturns in DWI crash

BEYOND BERGEN: Hours after reopening after more than 24 hours of repairs, the Bayonne Bridge again was closed after a local woman’s car hit several traffic barriers and overturned in what Port Authority police said was a drunk-driving crash.

Catherine Valentino Dobies, 29, had to be extricated after her 2013 Toyota landed on its hood around 1:45 a.m. yesterday, the authority’s Joseph Pentangelo said.

After being treated at Bayonne Hospital, she was arrested and charged with DWI. The car was towed and impounded, he said.

The bridge was closed in both directions until 3:50 a.m. and then again from 7:45 to 8:45 a.m. to replace the damaged traffic barriers, Pentangelo said.

The vehicle was towed from the scene and impounded.

The bridge was closed for repairs at 9 p.m. Friday and was supposed to stay that way until Monday morning. But the work was completed ahead of schedule and the bridge reopened just after 11 p.m. yesterday.

The roadway of the bridge is being raised 64 feet to allow larger vessels to pass beneath.
