Detectives moved in on a group of male suspects after spotting a drug deal going down around 8:15 near a shopping center at Chamberlain Avenue and West Broadway, the state Attorney General’s Office said in a statement.

A man identified as Ariel Acosta then drove at the detective, who fired his weapon and struck Acosta in the chest before he was pinned between the car and an unmarked radio car, the release said.

Acosta, 26, was taken to the Passaic County Jail after being treated at St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center. He is charged with attempted murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and other offenses, authorities said.

The officer was treated for injuries to his leg.

Authorities confirmed that two others were arrested: Yoel Sanchez, 30, of Paterson, and a 17-year-old boy, also of Paterson, who they said was carrying a loaded .22-caliber Ruger.

Like Acosta, Sanchez and the teenager face counts involving drugs and weapons.
