PATERSON, N.J. – Police were searching for 20-year-old Edward Andeliz of Paterson on attempted murder charges, but someone else got to him first.
Andeliz’s body was found on the street in the 200 block of 16th Avenue around 11:45 p.m. Saturday, Police Director Jerry Speziale said.
He'd been shot dead, the director said.
Authorities announced several weeks ago that they were searching for Andeliz after charging him with a March 1 shooting.
That night, patrol units responded to the area of 12th Avenue and East 23rd Street on a shots-fired report but didn't find a victim – he’d been driven in a private vehicle to St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center, Speziale said.
Paterson police and the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office (PCPO) were investigating Andeliz’s killing – as well as the shooting death and wounding of five other people in a crowded, illegal Main Street club around 5:30 a.m. Sunday.
“Upon arrival, [officers] found multiple people in the parking lot and inside the club that had been shot,” Speziale said. “Officers immediately rendered medical aid to the victims, and four were transported St. Joseph’s Hospital & Medical Center’s emergency room by ambulance, while two arrived on their own.
“One victim was pronounced deceased at the hospital,” the director said. “However, notification to the family has not been made.”
This year’s death toll in the city reached 16 and the number of shootings 37 – setting a pace for what would be more than 38 homicides and 88 shootings.
Anyone with any information on either killing is asked to contact Detective Sgt. Eli Lugo or Detectives Anthony Petrazzuolo, Ricardo Vasquez or Jack DeSalvo, or Detective Sgt. Marco Alliano and Detective Sabrina McCoy of the prosecutor’s office: (973) 321-1120.
