$10G reward offered in shooting of Wayne officer

UPDATE: Who says small town policing isn’t dangerous? As police in Bergen and Passaic counties continue a double manhunt, the state’s PBA president announced a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of two armed robbers who shot at Wayne Police Office Brian Worell, grazing his head, when he interrupted an overnight gas station holdup on Route 23.

The gunmen burst into the Route 23 Exxon station Tiger Mart convenience store around midnight, herded frightened employees and customers to the back — striking one of the workers in the head with a semi-automatic handgun — while grabbing cigarettes and other merchandise, police and witnesses said.

Within moments, Worell pulled up. As he got out of his crusier, the “two armed robbers told him not to touch his gun,” said New Jersey State PBA President Anthony Wieners.

“Worell took cover behind his police car, and the robbers shot at him twice. One round grazed the left side of his head,” Wieners added.

Worell bolted after the fleeing robbers, radioing for backups, as they ran up a side street. Other officers arrived and took over while Worell was taken to St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center in Paterson.

Police say he’s going to be fine.

“These two thugs terrorized workers, customers, and then opened fire on a uniformed police officer: They must be stopped”, Wieners said in announcing the reward.

Weiner praised Worell for protecting the public and thanked a higher power that the officer survived.

“[I]t was a close call tonight,” he said. (YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: Wayne officer ‘grazed’ by bullet)
