Upset with the rejection of his $276.3 million budget, the mayor warned council members that if the city does not adopt a budget, the state might take over supervision of city finances, according to NorthJersey.com. Just last week, hundreds of workers were told to stay home without pay for the day because of the lack of a budget, said NorthJersey.com.
The main objectors to the budget, councilmen Mohammed Akhtaruzzman, Alex Mendez and Andre Sayegh, have not offered suggestions to trim the total but have complained about excessive overtime payments, according to NorthJersey.com. The mayor hopes to pass the budget when Councilwoman Maritza Davila, who is a supporter, returns following the recent death of her father, added NorthJersey.com.
