Food Can Forgive Fines At Little Falls Library

LITTLE FALLS, N.J. — Residents with late fees at the Little Falls Public Library can have them forgiven by bringing in some food to donate to the needy.

A single donated item will wipe away any and all late fees, regardless of how large, through the end of the year. The deal does not go for lost or damaged materials, though.

Donations must be non-perishable items, which will then be given to local food pantries. Toiletries such as toothpaste will also be accepted.

This is the second year for the event in Little Falls, according to Children's Services Librarian Linda Belen.

Most of the donations go to St. Agnes and First Reformed churches in Little Falls.

"They're in desperate need of things," Belen said. "They can't keep them stocked."

This year's initiative marks a growth from the 2014 version, as it previously only lasted for one month, Belen said. While she did not have an exact amount, there are a fair amount of late fees accrued at the library, she continued.

The Rev. Emily Youngberg of First Reformed Church said they distribute food to about 30 local households a month. Since the church community is relatively small, the extra help in donations from the library are a huge benefit, Youngberg said.

It all works because of the kindness of the community, as the "Food for Fines" drive continues to be a success, Belen said.

"The people in the town are just so generous," she told Daily Voice. "Even if they don't have fines they're bringing food to us."

The Little Falls Public Library, located at 8 Warren St., accepts donations at the front desk.
