WAYNE, N.J. — It didn't take long for Carmella to become an integral part of her new Wayne family.

Carmella, a pit bull, joined the family of twins Tianna and Gianna Johnson, 10, in mid-December. The twins are both blind and wanted a disabled dog. Carmella has a leg deformity.

"We couldn't have really asked for a better fit," the twins' mother Dana Polito Corry said. "She's adapting very well not only with our daughters but other dogs."

Their Wayne home has four other dogs along with Carmella, another pit bull and three Chihuahua mixes. Corry called it a bit of a "crazy dog house."

Corry said she found Carmella through salon owner Sandy Roberto. Her daughters wanted a dog who was different, like them.

"Almost on cue the dog stands up and I see she has a problem walking," Corry said.

Carmella accompanied Gianna and Tianna to a therapy session recently and helped make other patients happy too, Corry said.

The girls always said to give everyone a chance, their mother said, and it proved true with Carmella as well.

"It's really bringing them out of their shells more," Corry said.
