UPDATE: It may be difficult for many to believe, but a 67-year-old driver who sped off after a crash that killed a Hawthorne grandfather as he crossed a Glen Rock street was sentenced to a plea-bargained 364 days in the Bergen County Jail. A clerk with the Criminal Division of Superior Court in Hackensack incorrectly reported a three-year state prison sentence for Marina Lee of Hawthorne earlier Monday. NJ Transit PD Nabs Philly Driver With Gun At Hawthorne Train Station
A Philadelphia man whose car was too close to the tracks at the train station in Hawthorne was arrested after NJ Transit police found him under the influence of drugs and carrying a gun, authorities said. Officers responding to a call of a 7:30 a.m. call of vehicle near the track right of way off Lincoln Avenue spotted the gun on the floorboard of the vehicle's driver side, NJ Transit Senior Public Information Officer Kate Thompson said. Fleeing Occupants Captured After Car Crashes Into Hawthorne Restaurant
Two people were arrested on drug charges after their car slammed into the side of an Italian restaurant in Hawthorne and they ran from the scene early Tuesday afternoon. The older-model Nissan crashed into Bella Fig on Lincoln Avenue shortly after 12:30 p.m., narrowly missing a fire hydrant. The vehicle struck a gas meter and deployed its front airbags. Both occupants fled and took refuge in the home of the vehicle's owner in the 100 block of Passaic Avenue in Hawthorne.
