Passenger Killed, Driver Seriously Injured In Route 80 Crash
A 38-year-old passenger was killed and the driver seriously injured in an overnight crash on Route 80, authorities confirmed.
Richard Bahamonte of Hillside was pronounced dead at the scene of the eastbound crash near the Teaneck/Ridgefield Park border west of Exit 68 just after 3 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, NJ State Police said.
The driver, Julio Brito, 40, of Hasbrouck Heights, lost control of the Honda, which careened off the road, slammed into a concrete barrier and ended up on its roof, they said.
State Police and medics from Holy Name Medical Center tried to resuscitate both occupants.

Bergen Man Killed Wife, Staged Robbery In Hopes Of Cover-Up: Prosecutor
A 71-year-old Bergen County man has been charged with murder on accusations he killed his wife then tried to cover up the crime scene, authorities said.
Michael Manis, of Hasbrouck Heights, called 911 saying he had just come home and found his wife dead at their Hamilton Avenue home, around 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella said.
An investigation found that Manis had actually killed his wife and then staged a robbery to cover up the homicide, Musella said.

NJ Man, 67, Drowns In Backyard Pool
A 67-year-old retiree from Wood-Ridge was in cardiac arrest when he was pulled from a backyard pool, family members said.
Dennis R. Haggerty was in the above-ground pool on Windsor Road when he suffered the attack shortly before 4 p.m. Thursday, July 6, loved ones said.
A family member and a neighbor quickly got him out, they said.
CPR was conducted and a defibrillator used on Haggerty, who was later pronounced dead at Hackensack University Medical Center, Wood-Ridge Police Capt. Joseph Biamonte said.
"Denny" Haggerty was described by many as kind, loving, gentle and generous.

Uber Driver, Accomplices Stage Knifepoint Holdup Of Passenger At NJ Hotel: Prosecutor
An Uber passenger was robbed at knifepoint outside a Saddle Brook hotel by a man who’d conspired with the female driver and another accomplice to hold him up, authorities said.
Uber driver Karina Eremyan, 30, of Fair Lawn was behind the wheel when ex-con Antonio Bowen, 28, of Fair Lawn put a knife to the passenger’s neck in the parking lot of the Crowne Plaza Saddle Brook hotel off Route 80 around 3:30 a.m. March 23, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella said.
Bowen forced the fare to turn over his backpack, which contained $3,000 and other undisclosed items, the prosecutor said Friday.
