Mysterious Tar Balls Found On NJ Beaches Prompts Coast Guard Investigation
The U.S. Coast Guard is investigating the arrival of mysterious tar balls on beaches from Sea Bright south to Asbury Park. Areas affected include Gateway National Park at Sandy Hook and the shoreline at Sea Bright, Monmouth Beach, Long Branch, Deal, Allenhurst and Asbury Park. A serious crash closed Route 71 in Monmouth County. A crash investigation was underway at about 7:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 23 between Roosevelt Avenue in Deal and Roosevelt Avenue in Long Branch, according to the New Jersey Department of Transportation. An 86-year-old Deal man will spend the rest of his life as a registered sex offender under parole supervision after admitting to having sexual contact with a child at various times over the course of about a decade, starting about 25 years ago, authorities said. Joseph Ammaturo, 38, of Long Branch was ordered to give up his local police job as well as all future public employment in New Jersey, Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher J. An Ocean Township man was charged with attempted burglary after police said he was seen trying to break into an Oakhurst home through the rear door then fleeing on a bicycle. A caller alerted police to the attempted break-in about 1:40 p.m. Thursday, providing what authorities said was a detailed description of the suspect, police said.
