Elmwood Park Detective Nabs Female Bank Robber From Teaneck, 22
An Elmwood Park detective nabbed a bank robber from Teaneck minutes after she fled with $331 from a Valley National branch on Friday, authorities said. Detective Michael Goldyn grabbed Gianna A. Baskerville, 22, as she headed west on Broadway away from the Elmwood Park bank, Police Chief Michael Foligno said. Baskerville "passed a note to a teller stating she had a gun demanding money but did not display a weapon," Foligno said. She fled west with the cash but didn't get very far. UPDATE: A crane ran over an extension cord, sparking a fire in a bowl of paper dust that spread in a building at the Marcal Paper in Elmwood Park Wednesday night, authorities said. Firefighters needed less than 90 minutes to extinguish the blaze. No injuries were immediately reported in the two-alarm fire, which began at the complex at Market and River streets around 7:45 p.m. The crane, which operates on a long track, ran over the cord, igniting a spark that lit the paper dust bowl in Building 10, said Police Chief Michael Foligno, who is also the borough administrator. Elmwood Park police on Sunday identified a pedestrian struck and killed Friday night on Broadway (Route 4) as a 47-year-old Paterson man. A family member identified Edier Lopez at the Bergen County Medical Examiner's Office on Sunday, Police Chief Michael Foligno said. "Our hearts and prayers go out to the family during this difficult time," the chief said. Two men were arguing over a parking space at an Elmwood Park garden apartment complex when one said the other pulled a gun from his backpack and pointed it at him, authorities said. The alleged victim and his girlfriend said they were with their infant child when the argument erupted in a Donor Avenue courtyard at the Elmwood Village Apartments late Friday, Police Chief Michael Foligno said. Falling Tree Hits Car, Blocks River Road In Elmwood Park
ELMWOOD PARK, N.J. -- The driver was OK after a falling tree struck a vehicle in Elmwood Park during Thursday night's rainstorm, authorities said. Borough firefighters and EMS workers cut up the tree and cleared River Road at Martha Avenue after the tree fell just before 9:30 p.m. Police Chief Michael Foligno said. River Road traffic in both directions was temporarily diverted, the chief said. The driver escaped without injury, but the vehicle had to be towed, he said.
