UPDATE: Authorities gave the all-clear for Hackensack High School students and staff to return after a bomb threat phoned in from out of state cleared the school. The "swatting" incident began shortly before 9 a.m. Friday, March 4, when a caller "indicated he put bombs at a specific location" on school grounds, said Hackensack Police Capt. Darrin DeWitt, the officer in charge of the department. Area streets were closed down and students and staff were moved to safe locations, the captain said. Hackensack police are investigating threatening letters sent to two school board members that include photos of their faces in the crosshairs of a gun with blood dripping from bullet holes in their foreheads. Capt. Darrin DeWitt, the department's officer in charge, said city detectives are tracing the source of the letters sent to neighbors Michael Oates and Scott James-Vickery. A Hackensack teacher has filed a lawsuit claiming she was denied 18 requested promotions because of her age and then retaliated against because she filed a complaint over the alleged discrimination. Mercedes Abreu Haines, 61, was moved from her role as assistant principal of the Jackson Avenue School to kindergarten teacher due to layoffs in 2011, according to the lawsuit, filed in New Jersey Superior Court this week.
