'Never A Dull Moment': Colleagues Mourn NJ Corrections Officer Who Died Of Coronavirus
A 47-year-old Burlington County corrections officer died of coronavirus complications Tuesday. Maria Gibbs, a senior corrections police officer, died of cardiac and kidney issues related to the virus, officials said. She was the third corrections officer in New Jersey to have died of COVID-19. Her husband reportedly tested positive for COVID-19 but has not developed any symptoms. Gibbs, formerly of Newark, posted a watermarked photo to Facebook that says: "I can't stay home. New Bergen County Undersheriff, Officers Sworn
The latest addition to Bergen County Sheriff Anthony Cureton’s executive team brings 25 years of experience as a corrections officer in Hudson County. The sheriff swore in Undersheriff Orestes Alvarez along with eight new officers in Hackensack on Thursday. Alvarez, who the sheriff said will be responsible for operations at the Bergen County Jail, retired from the Hudson sheriff’s office in 2015 as a lieutenant. Corrections Officer From Irvington Sexually Abused Inmates, Prosecutor Says
An Irvington man who works as a corrections officer at a federal prison in New York has been indicted on several charges accusing him of coercing female inmates into sex, the U.S. Attorney's Office in Manhattan said Tuesday. Colin Akparanta, 42, abused at least four women at the Metropolitan Correctional Center from 2012 through 2018, allegedly smuggling contraband like makeup, food and personal hygiene items in exchange for sex.
