St. Leo's was one of only 50 schools selected nationwide to participate in the special health program using an FDA-approved smart phone app as a thermometer, school officials said. At least 850 schools nationwide applied for the program.
All student families with smart phones will receive the $30 Kinsa thermometers in the mail as part of the manufacturer's FLUency program -- just in time for flu season. The devices allow parents to detect signs of potential health trouble earlier, with the hope it will lead to fewer sick days.
"Sick days are disruptive to learning, challenging for parents who must find child care, and costly to schools that are already struggling with strapped resources," said Inder Singh, Kinsa's founder and CEO. "We are thrilled to be able to offer select schools a tool to help keep more children healthy and in class."
