Investigators have yet to determine why the 54-year-old motorist from Iselin drove his 2008 Mercedes sedan onto the tracks at the Midland Avenue crossing around 5:45 p.m., NJ Transit’s William Smith told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

Eight hundred people were aboard the train, Smith said.

Although the trin struck the driver’s side, he wasn’t injured, he said. He refused medical attention from EMS and was issued summonses for careless driving and interference with transportation, Smith said.

Service was temporarily suspended and resumed less than a half-hour later, causing 15- to 30-minute delays, he said.

The driver, identified as Rakesh Sharma, received summonses from NJ Transit police for careless driving and interference with transportation.
