Sex offender found with pipe bombs, guns, ammo, Saddle Brook neighborhood cleared

YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: A Saddle Brook neighborhood was evacuated last night as authorities seized several homemade pipe bombs and nine guns after a convicted sex offender menaced his girlfriend’s two daughters with a rifle, Police Chief Robert Kugler told CLIFFVIEW PILOT this morning.

Robert Sunday, 51, was being held on $100,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail, charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a weapon and an illegal weapons possession charge.

Neighborhood homes were evacuated as a precaution while the Bergen County Police Department Bomb squad spent several hours at the girlfriend’s Bell Avenue home, across the street from a Korean church, Kugler said.

Saddle Brook firefighters and the volunteer ambulance squad were put on standby, he said.

“We got a frantic phone call around 8 p.m. from the girlfriend saying that Sunday had a weapon and threatened her two daughters,” the chief told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

Besides that gun, he said, police seized six long guns and three handguns, along with knives, flares, “banana-type” high-capacity ammo magazines and “what appeared to be several homemade pipe bombs in a metal box in the basement.”

The 6-foot-1-inch, 240-pound Sunday was convicted of sexual assault and child endangerment in September 1993. It was unclear how much prison time he served.

Records show that he was also charged in Bergen County in 2001 with failing to register as a sex offender.
