E. coli (fecal coliform) comes from human or animal waste.
“These bacteria can make you sick, and are a particular concern for people with weakened immune systems,” the Saddle Brook Office of Emergency Management said in a statement yesterday.
Microbes in these wastes can cause diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches, or other symptoms. They may be particularly dangerous to infants, young
children, and people with severely compromised immune systems.
Bacterial contamination happens when increased run-off enters the drinking water source (for example, following heavy rain), when water pipes break or when a treatment system fails.
Officials advised that people either use bottled water or bring all tap water to a boil to kill bacteria and other organisms. Let it boil for three minutes, then let it cool.
This goes for water used or drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and food preparation.
“We anticipate resolving the problem within twenty-four hours,” the OEM office release says.
