Saddle Brook Police Hunt Arsonists Who Set Cinder Block Company Fire

SADDLE BROOK, N.J. -- Whoever set an arson fire at a cinder block company in Saddle Brook the night of July 4th might have panicked and tried to douse it themselves, authorities said Wednesday.

"We're thinking it was probably juveniles who put a ladder up and climbed through a non-used window into a second-floor office" at Clayton Cinder Block on North 5th Street around 10 p.m. Tuesday, Police Chief Robert Kugler told Daily Voice.

"They lit some desk papers on fire -- it looks like with a blowtorch -- setting off the alarm," Kugler said.

Township firefighters who quickly doused the blaze, minimizing damage, found a fire extinguisher that the arsonists may have used.

"They might have panicked and tried to put the fire out themselves before fleeing," the chief said.

The Bergen County Sheriff's Bureau of Criminal Identification collected fingerprints and other evidence. Meanwhile, township detectives were reviewing surveillance video.

"It's probably best if they turn themselves in before we find them," Kugler said.
