Pride and honor at dedication of Saddle Brook veterans memorial

ONLY ON CLIFFVIEW PILOT: Memorial Day is clearest when you see it through the eyes of a local town — like Saddle Brook, where a monument that includes five flagpoles flying the colors of America’s military branches were dedicated during a spirit-raising event made possible by VFW Post 3484.

The flags of the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and Coast Guard were raised Memorial Day morning at Veterans Field.

A US flag set on a separate pole flew behind them.

The VFW put up the $25,000 for the monument, and its members — including VFW 3484 Commander Raymond Heffernan — watched with pride as members of each of the military branches raised the colors.

The flag poles themselves were literally funded by the community:

Along with individuals, several township organizations contributed — among them, the police, fire and ambulance squads, as well as the local veterans groups.
