Massive Route 80 cheese melt: Rig ignites after crash

YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: A tractor-trailer carrying a load of cheese burst into flames after hitting the back of a car on Route 80 in Saddle Brook during the evening rush hour, bringing both firefighters and state environmental investigators.

New Jersey State Police were quickly on the scene of the 5:35 p.m. crash and summoned firefighters from Saddle Brook.

The state Department of Environmental Protection also was notified “because of the runoff of cheesy water into a storm drain,” a law enforcement source with direct knowledge of the incident told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

The crash occurred at Exit 62 in Saddle Brook and backed up eastbound traffic for more than two miles. No serious injuries were reported.
