“Any time stolen weapons are in the hands of criminals poses a significant danger for the
general public and the police,” Police Chief Robert Kugler said. “This matter is receiving our utmost attention and deliberate actions until we can find and remove the guns from the hands of dangerous persons.”
Making the task even more difficult, Kugler said, was that the homeowners didn’t return from a holiday vacation until yesterday, at which point his officers were able to conclusively determine what was missing.
The chief said they reported four handguns taken: a .45-caliber semi-automatic, two .380-caliber semi-automatics and a single Smith & Wesson revolver, along with jewelry of an as-yet undetermined value.
Police immediately responded to a call from the homeowner’s alarm company and found a rear sliding glass door open moments after the Sunday break-in on Claremont Avenue.
“A search of the home found the master bedroom and closets to be rifled through,” Kugler said.
The chief didn’t go into much more detail. However, a law enforcement official with direct knowledge of the situation told CLIFFVIEW PILOT tonight after the story broke that the homeowners had taken legal custody of the weapons, which belong to the wife’s parents.
Authorities quickly worked together to get the serial numbers and other identifying characteristics into the national stolen property database used by law enforcement authorities.
