Both departments responded to find the 20-something Montclair woman “right at the water’s edge” off Kipp Avenue and River Drive just after 8 a.m., Police Capt. Frank Thorpe told CLIFFVIEW PILOT shortly after the incident.

“She was distraught over the breakup of her relationship with her boyfriend,” the captain said.

Officers from both departments talked with her, however, and eventually she was taken to Bergen Regional Medical Center.

“It was a great effort all around,” Thorpe said. “She would have definitely gone over the falls if she went in.”
