Ridgewood Vet: Offer To Sterilize Deer Still Stands SADDLE RIVER, N.J. — Veterinarian Dean Cerf of Saddle River has a deer management offer for the borough that’s tough to turn down. He’s made it before. He stands by it now. It’s even a privately funded proposal. Now it’s a matter of waiting to see whether the borough council approves controlling the deer population by sterilizing – not hunting. Last week Saddle River residents voted, 715-457, in favor of using non-lethal means only. “The people have spoken out strongly for non-lethal,” said Cerf, director of Ridgewood Veterinary Hospital in Ridgewood and Midland Park. “Now it’s a matter…

The British Are Coming! Re-enactors Stage Invasion At Fort Lee RIVER EDGE, N.J. — This weekend, the Brigade of the American Revolution will re-enact an epic scene from history in Fort Lee and River Edge. The 240th Anniversary of the British Invasion and American Retreat highlights the happenings of Nov. 20, 1776. Some 5,000 British, Hessian, and Loyalist troops, led by Lt. Gen. Lord Cornwallis, scaled the Palisades and marched against Fort Lee. An alert officer warned the American troops, who retreated across the Hackensack River at New Bridge, known as “the bridge that saved a nation.” Today, Historic New Bridge Landing in River Edge houses the Berg…
Upper Saddle River Woman Helps Girls Break Slavery Cycle Upper Saddle River Woman Helps Girls Break Slavery Cycle
Upper Saddle River Woman Helps Girls Break Slavery Cycle UPPER SADDLE RIVER, N.J. — Of course Eileen Geraghty of Upper Saddle River flew to Guatemala to help girls escape the cycle of slavery. What does the squalor of Guatemala City have to do with life in Saddle River? Nothing. And everything. “I am a mom. The thought of someone harming my children sickens me,” said Geraghty, 54. “So I was drawn in by the reality of these children throughout the world who are so vulnerable, who need someone to protect them.” She and 11 others went to Central America with Durga Tree International, a nonprofit dedicated to educating and financially empowering…
Powerless To Powerlift: Ridgewood Man Beats Back Injury Powerless To Powerlift: Ridgewood Man Beats Back Injury
Powerless To Powerlift: Ridgewood Man Beats Back Injury RIDGEWOOD, N.J. — It was most unlikely that Steve Freides of Ridgewood would be a strength training teacher and weightlifter. Not at 61 years old. Not at 148 pounds. But he is. One day in October 1997, when he was 42, Freides was talking to his wife on the second floor of their home. Suddenly, he was in extreme pain. “A disk in my back, my L4-L5, just exploded,” Freides recalled. “Twenty minutes after my back started hurting, I was lying on my bed in a fetal position,” he added. “I couldn’t move.” Ambulance workers carried Freides down the steps and to the ambulance on a dining room ch…
Saddle River Council Gets An Earful On Deer Hunting Votes Saddle River Council Gets An Earful On Deer Hunting Votes
Saddle River Council Gets An Earful On Deer Hunting Votes SADDLE RIVER, N.J. — The Borough Council listened to resident after resident Monday night, each weighing in on last week’s vote to both hunt - and not hunt - deer in the borough. Like the vote itself, comments were split down the middle. “I’d like to hear what your interpretation is of the residents’ vote,” resident Amy Atkinson asked the council. Mayor Al Kurpis replied the governing body hadn’t yet convened to discuss the results. But Council Member Paul Schulstad read a personal statement that the mayor said seemed to reflect the sentiments of the council. Schulstad called the two que…
Oh, Deer: Saddle River Wrestles With Yes/No Vote On Hunting Oh, Deer: Saddle River Wrestles With Yes/No Vote On Hunting
Oh, Deer: Saddle River Wrestles With Yes/No Vote On Hunting SADDLE RIVER, N.J. —Saddle River residents supported hunting deer and not hunting deer at the polls Tuesday. They voted on two non-binding municipal questions, each on the same topic but worded differently. The vote leaves them with a question: now what? It may be answered at Monday’s Borough Council meeting when Mayor Al Kurpis gives an update on the issue and Councilman Paul Schulstad reports on the Wildlife Management Committee. Since the questions are non-binding, the vote tallies will be one factor the governing body takes into account as it evaluates and implements a policy to manag…
Ridgewood Takes Stand Against Pilgrim Pipeline Ridgewood Takes Stand Against Pilgrim Pipeline
Ridgewood Takes Stand Against Pilgrim Pipeline RIDGEWOOD, N.J. — Ridgewood has joined a growing number of North Jersey towns opposing the Pilgrim Pipeline. It passed a resolution, 4-0, Wednesday night, with Councilwoman Bernadette Walsh recusing herself. According to the resolution, the state has the authority to direct Ridgewood to supplement the water supply of towns affected by a pipeline disaster. Therefore, it reads, Ridgewood’s resources “would be negatively impacted for years to come.” In this official measure Ridgewood also asks for: A moratorium on any activity concerning the planning and constructing of the pipeline; A rev…
Ridgewood's Pomander Walk Remains No-Parking Oasis Ridgewood's Pomander Walk Remains No-Parking Oasis
Ridgewood's Pomander Walk Remains No-Parking Oasis RIDGEWOOD, N.J. — Pomander Walk in Ridgewood will remain an oasis of serenity, free of parked cars, after the Village Council defeated an ordinance Wednesday. Residents, some of whose properties abut the Red Cross building on Godwin Avenue, have enjoyed a parking prohibition from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. All seven days of the week. Down the entire length of the cul-de-sac. But then Ordinance 3556 came down the pike. It would have restored two-hour parking on Pomander, just on the north side, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. all days except Sundays and holidays. Pomander Walk residents showed up, en masse,…
