Gunshots Break Windows In Mount Vernon's Doles Center
MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – Gunshots broke a handful of windows at the Doles Center in Mount Vernon Saturday afternoon, according to News 12. Though dozens of people were in the Doles Center, no one was hurt when shots came through the building around noon and broke the windows, News 12 said. The incident occurred hours after someone had been shot to death on nearby South Second Avenue, reported News 12. No connection between the two incidents has been confirmed, News 12 noted. Haverstraw Sixth-Grader Finishes 15th At National Spelling Bee
HAVERSTRAW, N.Y. – Haverstraw Elementary School sixth-grader Sravanth Malla participated in the National Spelling Bee last month, finishing 15th, according to lohud.com. Malla advanced past the preliminary rounds on May 25 as one of the top 45 finishers, qualifying for the next day's finals, lohud.com said. He made it as far as the sixth round, getting tripped up by 'monture', spelling it 'moncheur' instead, reported lohud.com. Lourdes High School Senior Honored By Dutchess County Bar Association
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Dutchess County Bar Association honored Our Lady of Lourdes High School senior Katha Sikka with the Ben Allen Breslow Award at its annual Awards Luncheon on Thursday at the Poughkeepsie Grand Hotel. Sikka is the third straight Lourdes student to win the award, which is given to the best student attorney in the Mock Trial competition. Joy Johnson and Brigid Cruser were honored in 2014 and 2015, respectively.

Tests Find Unsafe Levels Of Lead In Yonkers Schools
YONKERS, N.Y. – A round of voluntary tests started by the Yonkers City School District in April found unsafe lead levels in various water outlets connected to school buildings, according to News 12. Twenty-five water outlets across the 39 buildings in the school district had elevated levels of lead, News 12 said. Lincoln High School was found to have the most issues, with 10 water fixtures needing to be shut off, reported News 12. Old faucets and pipes were found to be the issue, News 12 noted. Suspect In Carmel Disappearance Had Girl's Underwear, Court Records Show
CARMEL, N.Y. – The main suspect in the 1995 disappearance of a teenage girl in Carmel had her underwear in his possession, court documents revealed, according to lohud.com. Police discovered Robin Murphy's underwear in a suitcase belonging to Howard Gombert Jr. when he was arrested five years later on an unrelated sexual assault charge, lohud.com said. School Board Authorizes Ramapo High Roof Repair
RAMAPO, N.Y. – Ramapo High's leaky roof will get a $1 million repair this summer thanks to the East Ramapo school board, according to lohud.com. The school board approved the repairs during Tuesday's board meeting, noted lohud.com. Money for the repairs is being allocated through a state program intended for emergency funds, reported lohud.com. SUFFERN, N.Y. – Suffern police recently charged two men with criminal contempt and criminal mischief, among the latest arrests made by the department. A 23-year old Suffern man was charged with criminal mischief after officers were called to a home on East Park Place due to a report of a domestic dispute. The man had gotten into an argument with his mother and she had locked herself in a room as a result. Witness Gives Poughkeepsie Woman's Possible Motive At Murder Case Hearing
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – A witness stated a possible motive during a pretrial hearing Thursday for a Poughkeepsie woman suspected of killing her fiance, according to News 12. While on the stand, an investigator stated that Angelika Graswald said that her fiance was having second thoughts about their engagement, News 12 said. Graswald is suspected of tampering with her fiance's kayak so that she could collect on a life insurance policy, reported News 12. The next hearing is set for June 20, News 12 noted.
