Responders put boats in the river amid reports that a man or woman was last seen sitting on the bridge.
"The accounts kept changing," Detective Capt. Patrick Feliciano told Daily Voice. "Someone said it was girl or woman, then someone said it was a man."
Rutherford firefighters "checked both shorelines," while police on both sides of the river searched the immediate areas "just to be sure," Feliciano said. "The conclusion is that it's unfounded."
The bridge directly abuts the river in certain stretches.
