Francis Tattoli, 24, at first was charged with attempted murder and weapons possession after East Rutherford police arrested him following the attack the night of Dec. 17.
Charges were upgraded to murder after 25-year-old Monet Thomas of Kearny died last Thursday, records show.
She'd been choked and died of brain damage, authorities said. She also had stab wounds on her hands.
Thomas was visiting her boyfriend in the 258 Summer Street complex when Tattoli attacked her, Bergen County Prosecutor Gurbir S. Grewal said.

The boyfriend later discovered her just inside the doorway of Tattoli's apartment, a source told Daily Voice.
Thomas, who was unresponsive, “was transported to Hackensack University Medical Center, where she remains in critical condition,” Grewal said.
Tattoli “fled his apartment but was soon apprehended by East Rutherford Police a short distance from the home,” the prosecutor said.
Charges against him also include kidnapping.
His father, Michael Tattoli, was sentenced in October to six months in prison and six months of home confinement after admitting he used using $191,295 in income that he didn't report on his tax returns for personal expenses.
The elder Tattoli pleaded guilty in federal court in Trenton in June to not reporting income on his 2010, 2011 and 2012 tax returns.
