Chicken Waste Spill Causes HazMat Situation Along South Jersey Highway
A trailer hauling chicken waste products crashed, spilling its contents all over Route 55 and causing a HazMat situation in Gloucester County on Monday, Feb. 27. The northbound side of the roadway was closed in Deptford from mile marker 59.2 to the Route 42 interchange following the 9 a.m. crash. The roadway had reopened as of 1:45 p.m., but crews were still on scene for cleanup. HazMat crews, the New Jersey State Police, NJDOT, and multiple fire departments were on scene. Environmental services were notified and were monitoring the incident. No injuries were reported.

An unsecured canister of mace hospitalized 10 people including four firefighters at a Jersey City building Tuesday, Sept. 13, officials said. Police and fire crews were called to 500 Bergen Ave., around 5 p.m. for reports of a strange odor. More than 100 gallons of cooking oil were spilled from a truck in a massive HazMat incident in Sussex County, authorities said. The Newton Fire Department responded to the spill alongside local police and the county HazMat team on Wednesday, June 22, the department said. Upon arrival, crews confirmed the leak and immediately worked to prevent the oil from spilling into a storm drain. Six students were hospitalized for respiratory distress after they were exposed to pepper spray at their Jersey City middle school Monday, a city spokeswoman said.
