The package was found in a wire-mesh trash can near a heavily used playground area around 1 o’clock.

Ridgewood police closed the main entrance and evacuated everyone in and near the playground for about 45 minutes while the bomb squad did its work.

Several BCPD patrol units were also on scene.

The package turned out to be harmless, authorities said.

Less than two hours later, the bomb squad was at the Kmart on Broadway in Westwood after an employee reported receiving a phoned-in bomb threat.

The store was evacuated and the building was swept. It reopened a short time later after nothing out of the ordinary was found.
