Bergen prosecutor: Garfield rapist broke into home, threatened woman with ax

YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: A 55-year-old Garfield man beat and then raped a woman after breaking into her home, then threatened to kill her — while wielding an ax — if she reported him, Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said today.

Jorge Merced was being held on $250,000 bail in the Bergen County Jail pending a court appearance after he was arrested yesterday by Garfield police and members of Molinelli’s Special Victims Unit.

Merced is charged with first-degree aggravated sexual assault, aggravated assault, making terroristic threats, burglary, two counts of weapons possession and contempt of court.
