Seketl’e, the Baby Warrior
Surgeons conducted emergency surgery before dawn this morning after Baby Seketl’e developed a blood infection and his lungs began failing.
It was an extremely risky procedure, family members said, with only a 50-50 chance of saving him.
He made it into recovery but died soon afterward.
Half-brother Torin Jacobs Jr. was terribly upset by the turn of events, his mother, Amy McCambridge Steppe, told CLIFFVIEW PILOT late this afternoon.
Seketl’e’s family temporarily relocated from their home in Anchorage, Alaska, to Seattle after the infant was flown there by helicopter.
No one knew how long their stay would be or whether Seketl’e would live until a donor could be found.
Showing his love for the boy, Torin created custom-designed t-shirts with an illustration of a soldier on the front that reads: “BABY WARRIOR SEKETL’E.”
The back was both inspired and inspiring: There’s an illustration of Earth with the words: “LITTLE BRO – THE WORLD IS PRAYING.”

Seketl’e, whose name means “little brother” in Koyukon Athabascan, his mother’s language — in honor of his relationship to Torin — was afflicted with hepatic hemangioendothelioma.
He was a fighter, his folks said, and had overcome so many odds that they believed their prayers might come true.
