A DUI crash that snapped a telephone pole shut down Maywood Avenue for hours—just blocks from where a child was struck by a vehicle later that evening, authorities said.
The first crash occurred just after 2 a.m. on Thursday, March 13, when Malcolm Lee, 35, of Hackensack, was driving southbound on Maywood Avenue near Lenox Avenue in a 2006 Honda CR-V, Maywood Police Chief Terence Kenny said.

At 10:47 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 6, a vehicle carrying six people was traveling on Raymond Boulevard toward the Route 1&9 southbound on-ramp, Essex County Prosecutor Theodore Stephens II said. The vehicle then veered off the roadway, went airborne, and struck a support column for the Pulaski Skyway, Stephens said.
