UPDATE: An ex-con from Garfield who served time for a botched drug deal that led to the shooting of an undercover police officer was arrested on Thursday and charged with causing the overdose death of a 30-year-old user late last summer. Melvin Guzman, 29, is charged with strict liability in the drug-induced death of Ivan Santiago of Passaic last Sept. 17, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella announced on March 28. Two Adult Pedestrians, Child, 4, Struck Outside Garfield Walmart
Two adults and a 4-year-old were knocked down by a vehicle outside the Garfield Walmart early Tuesday afternoon, authorities confirmed. A 28-year-old driver was making a turn in front of the Passaic Street superstore when his vehicle hit the three just after 12:30 p.m., police Capt. Richard Uram said. GARFIELD, N.J. -- Garfield police got more than they expected when they busted a shoplifter before dawn Monday and found him carrying a credit card stolen during a car burglary less than an hour and a half before, authorities said.
