: Woman Who Survived Coronavirus Shares Her Story
While the rest of the world is trying to make sense of the terrifying pandemic that is COVID-19, a 37-year-old woman from Seattle who survived the illness is telling her story. Elizabeth Schneider hopes her story, which she documented in a Facebook post, will bring peace of mind to others. The marketing manager believes she caught the bug at a party. No one was sneezing or coughing, but nearly 40 percent of attendees ended up sick within days, she said. It wasn't until after recovering that Schneider discovered she too had the virus. "The media tells you to wash your hands and avoid …

Hackensack Meridian's New Coronavirus Test Reduces Wait Time From Days To Hours
Hackensack Meridian Health has created a test that health officials say could save patients days of waiting for test results and help control the spread of coronavirus. Approved by the state's health department, the rapid response test will create a more effective triage system in hospitals and potentially better control the spread of coronavirus -- specifically reducing wait time from days to just hours, officials said. “We believe our test could make the difference in stemming outbreaks,” said David S. Perlin, Ph.D., the chief scientific officer and senior vice president of the …

Undercover Crossers: That Pedestrian You Don’t Stop For In Rochelle Park Could Be Police
Rochelle Park police aim to reduce the number of pedestrians struck by vehicles by crossing busy streets themselves – in plain clothes. The undercover street-crossers aren't looking only for motorists who fail to yield during the 60-day educational campaign that began on Wednesday. They’re also targeting jaywalkers and pedestrians who don’t cross streets safely – while also enforcing bicycle helmet safety. “Regrettably, since January 2019, Rochelle Park has experienced several serious collisions involving pedestrians,” Police Chief Robert Flannelly said. In one instance, an SUV struck an…

Firefighters, construction workers and staff at Hackensack University Medical Center teamed up to get a worker who’d suffered a medical episode on a scaffold 50 feet above the street inside the building Tuesday morning, responders said. Bloomfield High Senior Accepted To 15 Schools, Including Princeton
This can be a tense time of year for college-bound high school seniors, who are now learning where they’ve been accepted, where they’ve been wait-listed and which schools simply wished them well in their future endeavors. Emmanuel Odekunle of Bloomfield has a lot to think about too -- such as deciding which of the more than one dozen schools where he’s been accepted he’s going to attend. “As of this moment, I have not yet made a decision as to which university I will be attending,” the senior at Bloomfield High School said in an interview late last week. “God will direct us on the best one…

About half the increase in emergency room visits in New Jersey were related to patients’ behavioral health issues. The state is facing an opioid epidemic that is on target to claim 3,000 lives this year, up from 2,200 lives in 2016. B…

Down Syndrome Wiffle Ball Fundraiser Honors River Edge Man's Late Friend
Paul Bruno may live in River Edge, but the plumbing contractor's hometown ties are strong: On Saturday, a wiffle ball tournament he organized will raise money for the Judy Center for Down Syndrome at Hackensack University Medical Center in honor of a special man he knew while growing up in West New York. Many affectionately called Alejandro “Bolo” Carreno “the mayor of Miller Park.” And although doctors said he likely wouldn’t survive his teens, Carreno reached 60 before he died in May 2017. "Bolo" was a major presence in town for three decades -- particularly when it involved spo…

Fort Lee Chemistry Teacher Harassed Student With Sickle Cell Anemia: Lawsuit
The Fort Lee Board of Education is facing a lawsuit from a student's mom alleging her daughter was harassed by her high school chemistry teacher after correcting her lesson about sickle cell anemia, which she was diagnosed with. The civil complaint last month in Hackensack Superior Court by Tyrene Gibson says Suzanne Keefe bullied student "AGT" (Gibson's daughter) and the district failed to investigate the complaints. AGT transferred to Paramus Catholic High school where she is a rising senior. Gibson told Daily Voice that the district violated her daughter's rights under New Jer…
