Union County Jail Closing, Transferring Inmates To Essex In Move To Save $103M
The Union County Jail will be closing its Elizabeth facility and transferring its inmates to the Essex County Jail in Newark -- saving the county more than $103 million. Effective July 1, inmate housing will cease and the Elizabeth facility will begin operating only a hub to intake, process, temporarily detain and transport prisoners to the Essex County Jail. Shuttle buses will also be available to transport those wishing to visit prisoners in Essex County. A 26-year-old Elizabeth man was arrested at a Newark hotel, where he had been running a mobile heroin mill linked to 15 suspected overdoses across New Jersey, authorities said Agents found Marlon Lopez operating a heroin mill out of a hotel on Routes 1 & 9 in Newark, in which he was able to quickly mobilize the entire operation from room-to-room and to different locations altogether, New Jersey State Police said in a news release. Three Bronx, NY residents were arrested in connection with a Garden State Parkway pursuit that left one person seriously injured, authorities said. Troopers saw a gray BMW sedan pull out of the Brookdale Service Area and being speeding southbound on the highway in Bloomfield (Essex County) around 2:20 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 6, New Jersey State Police said. Authorities: Carlstadt Officer Not Fooled By Wanted Newark Driver Switching Seats
A wanted Newark man tried to avoid detection by switching seats with his passenger when a Carlstadt police officer stopped him for making an illegal turn, authorities said. A registered sex offender from Rockland County who spent a year in federal prison for assaulting a woman on a flight from Israel to Newark Liberty International Airport was sentenced Thursday to time served for sexually abusing a minor after his release, authorities said. Police made a number of arrests at a Nutley house party Aug. 16 that was advertised on social media -- and drew a multitude of uninvited guests. Officers investigating a noise complaint on Wayside Lane saw several dozen people fleeing as they arrived. An Irvington man has been arrested for gunning down another city resident a week ago, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office said Wednesday. Matthew Beckley, 26, has been charged with murder and illegal possession of a weapon. He was being held at the Essex County jail in Newark. Authorities say Beckley gunned down 34-year-old Gregory Wright June 19 in the 100 block of Maple Avenue in Irvington. The owner of a Nutley tanning salon was arrested on drug possession and other charges, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said Thursday. Martino Poli, 38, of Stanhope, owns the Sun of a Beach salon on Franklin Avenue and was being held at the Essex County jail. An East Orange man who held up a Bloomfield liquor store at gunpoint Wednesday was arrested yesterday after he was seen on security footage entering a taxi, Bloomfield police said. A Route 46 supplement store owner was peddling an illegal catnip cocktail that could be used as a date-rape drug, police in Fairfield charged.
