An Allendale police officer from Mahwah has been charged with hindering apprehension after he took responsibility as the driver in an accident so that the real driver could leave, authorities said. Victor T. Bartoloma, 35, told the Ridgewood officer arriving at the scene that he was the one who'd been in the crash on Jan. 15, but he really had brought his personal vehicle to the scene so that the individual initially in the accident could drive off, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella said. Violent Fugitive From Bergen County Captured
A violent fugitive being sought by state authorities forced some schools in northwest Bergen County to shelter in place during a manhunt that ended in his capture early Tuesday, authorities said. Ex-con Justinian Rocco, 26, of Allendale was seized by Waldwick police shortly after 7:30 a.m. Jan. 3 after colleagues from Saddle River, Midland Park and Wyckoff -- along with a K-9 unit -- converged on the area to assist, they said. A car carrier loaded with hybrids caught fire, causing some major morning headaches on northbound Route 17. Special foam was needed to help extinguish the blaze, which apparently broke out in the brake system and spread early Wednesday, Sept. 28, Saddle River Police Chief Jason Cosgriff said. A 55-year-old Allendale woman appeared to be using her cellphone when she was struck by a pickup truck while crossing against the pedestrian signal as dusk fell Wednesday, authorities said. An Allendale man recorded on a doorbell camera masturbating in a Waldwick resident's driveway early Saturday was captured a short time later by police from both towns, authorities said. An Allendale pedestrian was hospitalized after being struck by a pickup truck Friday night, authorities said. The 63-year-old woman was crossing West Orchard Street when she was struck by a Dodge Ram turning left off Franklin Turnpike shortly before 6:45 p.m., Police Chief George Scherb said. No, They're Not Repaving Route 17: Truck Keels, Macadam Spills
A dump truck spilled macadam onto a Route 17 exit and entrance ramp Saturday morning. The driver got out OK after the mishap at the southbound exit in Allendale around 9:45 a.m. A heavy duty wrecker was needed to right and remove the truck, as well as equipment, shovels -- and brooms -- to clean up the mess. The ramp off and onto Route 17 at East Allendale Avenue was closed for the time being. Bergen County sheriff's officers joined Allendale police and firefighters and state DOT workers at the scene.

Police from Allendale and Ramsey teamed up to nab two thieves from Philadelphia who’d been at work in the area, authorities said. A one-month-old girl wasn’t breathing when Allendale Police Officers Kevin Azevedo and Alex Helmer found her after responding to a frantic 911 call from her grandmother.
