Pilot, Student Survive Plane Crash At NJ Airport A plane crashed at the Essex County Airport this weekend after its landing gear malfunctioned and failed to deploy, authorities said.  The crash happened around 2:20 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 12, when a Piper Seminole P-44 crash-landed on its belly. The pilot, a 31-year-old man from Paterson, and a 32-year-old Elizabeth student survived without injury, Fairfield police said.  “The circumstances surrounding this crash could have been much worse, and these gentlemen are very lucky,” said Public Information Officer Stacy Chiarolanza. Landing Gear Fails Mid-Flight, Plane Skids Off Runway At NJ Airport A plane carrying two people skidded off the runway at the Essex County Airport on Wednesday evening, Nov. 6 after its landing gear failed, Fairfield police said. The flight began at Essex County Airport but was cut short about six miles out when the pilot noticed electrical issues, Fairfield Police Chief Anthony Manna said.  The pilot, a 58-year-old Weehawken man, immediately turned back toward the airport, but due to the electrical malfunction, the landing gear failed to deploy, causing the plane to skid off the runway upon landing around 5:35 p.m., according to Manna. Fairfield officers found the 1970 Piper PA-39 propellered plane on the grass just off of Runway No. 4 around 11:30 a.m., local police said. Details Released In Easter Sunday Plane Crash At Essex County Airport A pilot and his two passengers escaped uninjured when the plane they were flying in ran off a runway and crashed at the Essex County Airport on Easter Sunday, authorities said. The 2020 Citation CJ3 Plus was found at the end of Runway 22 in a drainage brook around 2:40 p.m., Fairfield police said. As police and EMS were arriving, the pilot and two passengers were climbing out, police said. They were identified as a 45-year-old man from Danbury, CT, a 57-year-old man from Poughkeepsie, NY and a 66-year-old man from Bernardsville, the plane's owner.
